New York in October is my Favorite
Hello!
It’s been a minute! Might as well make it a, “New York Minute” and come back with a post with some of my favorite content, a photo diary of one of my “mama time trips” to New York City. I was able to, with my husband’s blessing and help with the children, make a solo trip out to New York City last October, and it filled my little paper, to-go coffee cup up so much! I feel very blessed that I am able to travel to a place I love so much, and as often as I get to.
I keep a running list of places I want to go, eat, see, do in NYC and sometimes I completely veer off course and meander and wander and just get lost; but I always, ALWAYS discover something new-to-me about one of my favorite cities. This time I was on the outdoor balcony of the Whitney when I spotted the new Little Island off the Hudson and it was literally blocks away, so after the museum day, I walked over and enjoyed gorgeous views and what felt like the sunniest, warmest, dreamiest afternoon with bright blue skies. Everything was still in bloom and bright green, as it was a mild start to fall and I caught an abnormal warm spell of weather which worked out perfectly for a tourist in a walking city.
This trip was all about art and rejuvenation. Street art as seen on the streets of SoHo in allll the graffiti, and the FASHION (I popped in Simone Rocha and chatted with the boutique staff and got a little story on the designer) and the Jasper Johns exhibit (INCREDIBLE) at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and Kandinsky (AMAZING) at the Guggenheim, and performance art, “Wicked” the musical at the Gershwin Theatre. I had slices of pizza for dinner a couple of nights, but treated myself to a random late night dinner that was absolutely delicious at Extra Virgin. I even caught some filing of the Sex and the City Reboot, “And Just Like That,” right there in the West Village at Carrie’s apartment on Perry Street!
I enjoyed a waffle and a latte at Buvette (one of my favorites) al fresco one morning before the Whitney. A quick stop in Casa Magazine and I picked up a couple special fashion magazines. An easy omelette breakfast at La Bonbonniere, again al fresco (so much outdoor dining and this particular October had glorious 70 degree weather) and an avocado toast mid day in SoHo at Butler.
What else… oh, a breakfast sammie at The Butcher’s Daughter one morning before heading uptown and taking a stroll through Central Park where the only color I caught was that singular, rust tinted leaf. I walked all the way up to the Gugg and spent nearly half my day winding my way up the Kandinsky exhibit and soaking up that magnificent structure. An iced coffee from Bluestone Lane was taken to-go and enjoyed at the entrance to Central Park near the reservoir end where I leisurely sat and watched school children walking in with yoga mats and gym clothes and elementary age kiddos walking out in uniforms- how romantic, how surreal, how insanely privileged to be able to partake in Central Park on your school days as routine.
Finally had a famous chocolate chip cookie at Levain Bakery on the Upper East side, but that was after chatting with a local woman about the neighborhood she lived in as she decorated her brownstone in preparation for trick-or-treaters. Lots of walking… lots of talking… lots of sitting and just looking.
I had a donut! I LOVE donuts! I tried Donut Pub in Chelsea this time, after chatting to the guy in the gift shop at the Whitney and picking up a Donut map of NYC. I asked him how accurate it was and he said his favorite, Donut Pub was still around. It did not disappoint.
I took away one special treat from Cat Bird in Nolita to myself to commemorate this trip, and I flew home to my four little birdies who I missed an awful lot this time.
I saw a lot of changes, a lot of empty spaces, a lot has gone and left and is no more, but the places that remain have heart, and stories, and grit and the employees I talked to are so resilient and optimist and hopeful- the spirit and embodiment of New York City and why I love her so….
XO,
Glo
